My experience with The Circular Project Shop

Hi, my name is Ivan and I´m from New Yersey (USA)

Before coming to Spain to work at TCPS I had no idea of the negative impact fashion and in particular fast fashion stores such as H&M and Zara had on the environment at large and on people’s lives and living standards.  I also never knew that there were different types of economies other than the typical ones that we regularly think about (capitalistic, socialist, etc.) that in fact work to better the living standards and contribute to the common good of all: Common Good Economy, Circular Economy, Collaborative Economy.

Within a few weeks of working here at TCPS and learning from Paloma about ecological and sustainable clothing I realized the possibility it has to change the way we think of the economy as well as to increase the standards we have in the mainstream textile industry.  In focusing on organic and natural resources for the manufacture of clothing I have learned that it helps the environment and makes the planet better for everybody to live on, but also has possibilities to open new customer segments and potential client bases. This is especially true when it comes to countries that the idea of sustainable fashion has not been fully integrated into society or is not as well-known such as in the United States (ex. TCPS being first sustainable shop in Madrid, Spain). Additionally, in being given the opportunity to translate the internal audit of The Circular Project Shop I have learned about the financial aspects behind the project, the ecological commitment and foundation that it is based on, and every step and policy that the store has to stay true to those commitments. This will therefore allow me to take this information and apply it to any path I may want to take in the future with regards to a sustainable fashion clothing brand or store. All in all, I thank Paloma for guiding me through this experience and putting up with all my the mistakes I may have made throughout the process. I know that step by step and with a lot of dedication her project will continue gaining traction to become one of the sustainable fashion powerhouses of not only Madrid but Spain

Hola me llamo Iván y soy de New Yersey (EEUU)

Antes de venir a España a mis practicas en TCPS no tenía ni idea del impacto negativo de la moda y, en particular del impacto que tiendas de moda rápida como H&M y Zara tienen sobre el medio ambiente y sobre la vida de las personas y su calidad de vida. Tampoco nunca oí hablar de que había diferentes tipos de economías al margen de las típicas que se conocen normalmente (capitalista, socialista, etc.) que en hecho trabajar para mejorar el nivel de vida y contribuir al bien común de todos: Economía del Bien Común, Economía Circular, Economia Colaborativa.

Durante estas semanas de trabajo en TCPS y he aprendido de Paloma acerda de la ropa ecológica y sostenible y me he dado cuenta de lo importante que es cambiar la forma de pensar de la Economía, y también de aumentar los controles sobre industria  textil. Al utilizar recursos orgánicos y naturales para la fabricación de la ropa, he aprendido lo mucho que ayuda al medio ambiente y se consigue un planeta mejor para vivir todo el mundo. Incluso también tiene posibilidades de abrir nuevos mercados y nuevos clientes potenciales. Esto es especialmente cierto en aquellos países en los que la idea de la moda sostenible no ha sido completamente integrada en la sociedad, o no es tan conocido; como es el caso de los Estados Unidos (Ej. TCPS siendo primera tienda de moda sostenible en Madrid, España).

También se me dió la oportunidad de traducir la auditoría interna que la Economía del Bien Común realize a The Circular Project Shop y he podido aprender sobre los aspectos financieros detrás del proyecto, el compromiso ecológico y el fundamento en el que se basa, y cada paso que dé el Proyecto tiene que ser fiel a esos compromisos. Por lo tanto, esto me permitirá utilizar esta  información y aplicarla en cualquier camino que quiero tomar en el futuro con respecto a una marca de ropa de moda sostenible o tienda. Agradezco a Paloma por guiarme a través de esta experiencia y de soportar día a día  los errores que he tenido durante todo este tiempo. Sé que paso a paso y con mucha dedicación  su proyecto continuará ganando terreno hasta convertirse en una de las potencias de la moda sostenible, no solo en Madrid, sino en toda España.
